The delivery center in Londonderry, New Hampshire may have engaged in criminal bait-and-switch business practices when I bought a Model Y in May of this year.
In the Tesla app prior to delivery, I asked if I could have the trade-in value of my current car given to me as a check, rather than just applied as a down payment towards the new Model Y. The Tesla employee said yes.
So I selected the financing option with the higher interest rate (no down payment) in the app. They didn’t have an option in the app for getting your trade-in value as a check, that’s why I asked to confirm it could be done prior to delivery day.
Then on delivery day at the Londonderry delivery center, the financing agreement still said that the value of the trade-in vehicle was being applied as a down payment.
I pointed this out. I said I wanted the check, not a down payment, like I had asked for prior to delivery. One of the employees there handling our delivery, Troy Wortham, said to me in very clear terms after reviewing the situation: If you want the lower interest rate, we have to cancel your order and re-order, but if you want the check for your trade-in, I can update that in the system and Tesla will send you the check in 6-8 weeks.
I said: Ok great, I want the check.
Troy said: I’ll go do that right now.
Then he went into the back offices, and then came back out and confirmed it was all set. He said email him if there were any issues. And only then did I proceed with taking delivery of the Model Y.
The check never arrived after 8 weeks.
I emailed with Troy many times for many weeks, asking for help and not getting any answers (he would respond with things like: Sorry I’m busy, or The Team is checking on that, or just not respond at all).
I finally spoke on the phone with two Tesla employees from the Londonderry delivery center, Michael and Hannah. When I explained the situation, they were very defensive and dismissive of my concerns. They said no check was coming. They said that my complaint was “all hear-say” and that “You shouldn’t have signed the contract.” I was shocked. I asked if there was anything they could do. Hannah (who claimed to be Troy’s supervisor) said coldly: Sorry for the miscommunication, I can’t offer you anything, is there anything else I can help you with today?
This was a truly awful delivery experience and customer service experience.
Furthermore, Tesla clearly made material misrepresentations to me, without which I would not have taken delivery. This may be considered a criminal bait-and-switch business practice. @Tesla
