Funny thing about citizenship the louder politicians talk about loyalty, the less they talk about the Constitution that actually defines it.

Sen. Moreno rolls out a bill to end dual citizenship in America.

One year to choose, or lose your U.S. status.

Images of Ilhan Omar, stacks of passports, cheering crowds all wrapped in the language of “all or nothing” allegiance.

But here’s the rest of the story…

The Supreme Court settled this in 1967:

Citizenship isn’t a light switch the government can flip off.

Afroyim v. Rusk made it clear you can’t strip an American of their citizenship just because they hold another passport.

And nearly 7 million Americans live dual lives military families, immigrants who served this country, business owners, and neighbors in border communities.

You can tighten security without punishing loyalty.

You can question divided commitments without pretending the law says something it doesn’t.

That’s the part nobody wants to say out loud.

If we start treating citizenship like a lease the government can cancel, none of us are as safe as we think.
