Before Mark Bradford became one of the most prominent voices in contemporary art, he spent years working in his mother’s hair salon in the vibrant and culturally rich Leimert Park neighborhood in South Los Angeles. That’s where he first developed a curiosity in artistic and creative expression. But he wouldn’t pursue a formal arts education until he was 31.
Today, his abstract artworks transform ordinary materials, including hairdressing end papers, found signage, and even construction materials, into powerful stories centered on communities that are often overlooked. In this studio visit, Bradford takes us inside what it means to create a monumental painting that scales the three-story west wall of the Our Story Atrium in the Museum at the Obama Presidential Center.
Bradford's work is in a part of the Museum that is free and open to the public, and we can't wait for you to come see it yourself, on a campus where art, athletics, green spaces and civics all intersect to empower everyone who visits.
