My new paper, ‘“What I’m not gonna buy”: Algorithmic culture jamming and anti-consumer politics on YouTube’ has just been published in New Media and Society! I presented this at #algorithmsforher organised by @sophiehbishop and others. Here is a thread about it.
Excited to present my paper at #AOIR2024 this afternoon in this panel - exploring a post-work approach to influencer labour through my research on sustainability influencers.
After many months spent producing this podcast the first episode is finally live! If you’ve ever been intrigued or frustrated by overblown claims of the media’s influence on people’s behaviour give it a listen.
When two children murdered toddler James Bulger in 1993, the British media lost their damn minds and tried to blame a horror video.
We unravel a tangled web of sensationalism, fraudulent research, and some truly bizarre claims about dogs.
Our debut episode is live!
Years(!) ago @RacWood reached out about collaborating. The result is this special section in Gender Place and Culture on the Gendered Body During COVID-19. Our intro is open access, and offers reflection on how gender even affected who is included here https://t.co/XKLS4a1VDV
In the face of brutal deductions by employers, solidarity is how we win

£1,900 of my pay taken by my employer this month for the MAB. All my undergrad marking was done by scabs, so most of this is for THREE postgrad essays. One day’s work.
This sector just keeps escalating its hostility to workers. Where will it end? @KeeleUCU#settlethedispute
URGENT: @KeeleUniversity is rushing policy through senate in a cynical attempt to undermine the MAB. The policy de-values degrees by allowing students to graduate with only 75 credits. Students and staff deserve so much better than this.🧵1/5
Making my second attempt to travel to Toronto after a cancelled flight yesterday. Looking forward to finally getting to #ICA23 and catching up with old and new friends. My paper on the ethical authenticity projects of sustainability influencers is on Sunday afternoon.
This is part of a forthcoming themed issue of the journal I co-edited with @binarythis on the gendered body in Covid-19. Full article here https://t.co/F6OHjBSOkL
3 years in the making, my paper on beauty and body work in the 2020 UK lockdown is finally published open access in Gender, Place and Culture.
I argue that beauty took on a more affective dimension in lockdown: used for 'self-care', generating positivity, & managing fear/anxiety
So pleased to see this article out, which is part of our special issue on Covid-19 and the gendered body. The full issue and intro from @RacWood and me, out soon!

Wow, Queen Mary uni have set up this open jot form for students to snitch on striking staff ! Would be a shame if it got spammed and was unusable ! https://t.co/bMEhmaD2Xm
Students stand in solidarity with the 70,000 @ucu members striking later this month.
Staff teaching conditions are students’ learning conditions. We must fight together for a fairer, healthier education system for everyone who works and studies.
