It is absolutely appalling how rampant “dumping” still is in horse racing. Weekly I handicap claim options and watch race replays for a client and the amount of sore horses I see running in races and horses clearly being “dumped” via the claiming ranks is deplorable. The next step to cleaning up horse racing is penalizing trainers & owners who repeatedly try to slip sore horses into races.

I agree! As a guy who formerly trained, horses that are healthy are capable of running every 3-5 weeks. In Australia, horses prep on the Saturday for the @MelbourneCup on the upcoming Tuesday.

But it’s a chicken or the egg scenario. Owners want high percentage trainers, and the only way to be a high percentage trainer is to run your horses in spots they can easily win and spacing them out. If you run horses often and they don’t win at that 25% clip, you get labeled as an average trainer and you’ll never get the opportunity from bigger owners to train quality horses. It’s a dilemma that every trainer has to deal with and if you asked most of them they’d prefer to run more often. It’s why the guys with massive operations continue to stay at the top because they have enough numbers and the stock that allows them to rest/space good horses and pull in other ones off the bench so they are always walking into the paddock with a talented horse that has a shot. And because of this, they end up winning those big races, and then get rewarded with more good horses which keeps them in that position.

Nobody digs into the details and actually looks at the quality of horse each trainer receives and what they do with them, which is the true barometer of how good a trainer is. They just look at the win percentage. @RaceForza
