Min. @EngJonard wrapped his @STISecretariat mission at @Makerere , prioritizing conversion of Ugandan science into health & economic solutions. Universities must lead biomedical research, genomics, diagnostics &enterprise so innovation becomes prosperity, not perpetual imports.
The other day, our own @vivianArin46468 demonstrated to @STISecretariat Minister @EngJonard how MATICA works. The low-cost, card-based game developed by MakBME uses social play to boost children’s mathematics skills, critical thinking, & mental agility.

Translating Surgical Device Innovations in Uganda: Insights from Makerere University
We were honored to host Mr. Brian Matovu, a lead Biomedical Engineer at the Makerere University Biomedical Engineering Unit, for an insightful session on the journey of local medical innovation.
Mr. Matovu shared the incredible work being done at the unit to address local clinical gaps through homegrown engineering. Key innovations currently under development include:
UVSteri Device: A rapid disinfection solution born out of the COVID-19 pandemic, now ready for clinical trials and seeking funding.
Local CPAP Manufacturing: Engineering affordable respiratory support for neonatal and intensive care.
The Gastro Bag: A specialized solution for managing gastroschisis in newborns.
Surgical Fracture Table & NPWT Device: Locally-produced tools to enhance orthopedic and wound care.
Laparoscopic Box Trainer: Empowering surgeons with affordable training tools.
Key Suit Laparoscopic Devices: High-precision tools with clinical trials scheduled to begin before the end of this year.
The Road Ahead
The unit is actively looking to expand its impact by:
Building surgical innovation and evaluation networks to bridge the gap between the lab and the operating theater.
Forming strategic partnerships for policy advocacy and co-designing to ensure these devices meet regulatory standards and clinical needs.
Together, we are transforming surgical care in Uganda through engineering excellence.

Biomedical engineers face significant challenges, including insufficient budget for repairs, lack of appreciation in hospitals, & exclusion from equipment purchasing decisions. Machine breakdowns demand more than repair costs, & hospitals can't operate effectively without them.
Dr. Jones Obungoloch: Building an MRI from scratch requires innovation& perseverance. From winding wires to designing permanent magnet systems, the journey to affordable & accessible MRI tech is complex, but it holds promise for improving healthcare outcomes in Africa. @MbararaUST
