🦔AI companies are bulk-buying rare books, scanning them through high-speed machines that cut the spines off, and shredding the originals. A service called ISBNdb facilitates orders of up to a million books and keeps buyers anonymous. Pre-2022 books are premium because they're free of AI-generated text. A federal judge ruled the practice is fair use because eliminating the original means only one copy exists at a time. Anthropic hired the former head of Google Books partnerships to obtain "all the books in the world."
My Take
This got to me. A bookseller told 404 Media that rare books with almost no surviving copies are being fed into this pipeline. Books that survived wars, fires, and centuries of handling are being shredded so an AI can learn to write a better marketing email.
ISBNdb's website literally says "'AI company destroys two million books' is not a headline that generates sympathy," and they still built an entire business around making it happen quietly. They offer NDAs as a feature. They coach clients to call it "digital preservation."
I've covered AI companies scraping the internet, torrenting libraries, and stealing music. This is worse because it's irreversible. You can re-upload a website. You can reprint a bestseller. You can't replace the last three copies of an 18th-century botanical text once someone shreds them for training data. And the judge said it's legal. So it's going to accelerate.
"We shred rare books and offer NDAs so nobody finds out" is a legitimate business model in 2026. What a timeline.

It’s truly unbelievable how hypocritical the Va Dems are… so worried about reckless driving “super speeders” that they elect one to statewide office as head of law enforcement and then order judges to hammer other people.
Not even a turned head, averted eye, or blush of self realization.
Can’t believe there was nothing in this race call on this here 4th day of July in this here United States of ‘Merica about this here European shipper by sire of name Starspangledbanner… what an opportunity this was going to be , but wasn’t. Unbelievable!
The middle class is the most expensive place to live, and no one talks about it. Lower income households get assistance. The wealthy use tax strategies and loopholes. But the middle class pays full taxes, full tuition, full healthcare, full everything. So you work 50 hours a week just to stay in the same place and fund everyone’s life except yours.
🚨 New: Dominion Energy and Valley Link are facing pushback on a proposed 115 mile long high voltage transmission line to provide power to data centers in Northern Virginia.
It would span nine counties, starting in Lynchburg and ending in Culpeper County.
I’ve spoken with concerned homeowners in Orange and Spotsylvania Counties about how the line would rip through their homes, farmland, and property.
Tonight---ahead of an important board of supervisors meeting Tuesday---I spoke with residents in Culpeper County who live by the proposed 88 acre substation in Richardsville.
The Culpeper County Board of Supervisors is hosting Dominion Energy for a presentation. The meeting is happening Tuesday May 19th at 6:30 pm.
Residents in the impacted nine counties are expected to attend the meeting in Culpeper because the Board of Supervisors could block it if enough people speak out.
The reason why you can post on this website is because it runs entirely on massive data centers full of servers.
You literally cannot post your degrowth lunacy w/out the data centers you want gone.
The hypocrisy, or at least profound lack of self-awareness, is just fascinating.
If you're not from Virginia and you're about to torch your reputation crying racism over L. Louise Lucas finally getting what she deserves, know this: The only black people she ever helped in all her years in office are herself and her children.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Blue states are clamoring for special taxes on the wealthy (California, Washington, it will spread elsewhere) at the same time as massive amounts of fraud are being uncovered. This really encapsulates the moment we are in - our government is incompetent, corrupt and wants more.
