Writer, teacher. Dx w/ALS age 28. I advocate and raise awareness by blogging to show the reality of #ALS with humanity, vulnerability, and unflinching honesty.

I would add Opening Door Using Walker gymnastics. I left the sport 8 years ago. However, I vividly remember falling off the balance beam too many times count. Ouch! #ALS#ThisIsALS#EndALS
#ALS Olympics?
1. Sports bra twisties
2. Hair dryer weightlifting
3. Putting on underwear breakdancing
4. Head stuck in shirt wrestling
5. Bidet kayaking
6. Petting dog floor routine
7. Fork to mouth synchronized eating
The simplest task is an Olympic event when you have #ALS!
I just parted with a nurse who has become a dear friend. She gave me a quote from a book on archetypes of wild women. I gave her this song.

Two words in Steve's bio hit me: "Embracing ALS." I have been fighting #ALS for 9 years. What else could I do? It's trying to kill me! But is there a different way? What does embracing ALS look like? This is not a rhetorical question! Ideas please #LivingWithALS#Inspiration
One week ago today, I had the opportunity to get "dressed up" in my tuxedo and received the Arthur Ashe ESPY Award for courage. It remains a sublime honor, given that Arthur Ashe exemplified courage as living with an open heart of humility, kindness, and generosity that united humanity.
With that in mind, do we have the courage to unconditionally love our neighbors, our so-called enemies, and love ourselves?

Steve Gleason accepts Arthur Ashe Courage Award... "Steve has always been interested in having a deeper conversation, going on a bigger adventure, finding ways to experience the wonders of the world." @SteveGleason#ALS#ALSAwareness#Inspiration

Wish they find something similar to build strong muscles, or better yet, new motor neurons

I like this, but it's hard to imagine the man who raped and attempted to murder me as dead when he never had a day in court and roams free. But I can't defeat a #memory. I have to accept it happened and learn ways to return to the present when #PTSD drags me back to that room.
I often think I have #ALS because I almost killed Evan in a car accident when I was 19. Evan said the car that hit his door on the passenger side sped up to cut me off. I don't know. I just saw headlights before spinning off the road. Blood & glass everywhere. My SUV was totaled.
Good Will Hunting's "It's not your fault" scene has powerful meaning to those of us living with #ALS. Read my latest blog: Robin Williams Says F*ck ALS.

Lyrics that feel like #ALS & #PTSD:
"They stab it with their steely knives, but they just can't kill the beast."
"You can check out anytime you like but you can never leave."

FAQ that don't matter: I wasn't drinking. I was wearing a t-shirt & jeans. I was w/a group of friends - that included my rapist. A woman can be naked & not "ask for it." She can be drunk. She can be alone. A woman is NEVER to blame for #rape. Make this go viral. #Trauma#MeToo
3/3 Yesterday morning was the first dose of the antipsychotic that will hopefully stop the hallucinations. A 2nd dose today. 12 days left until I can increase the dose to a therapeutic level. 12 days feels like forever. #MentalHealth#Trauma#PTSD#MeToo#ALS
2/3 The Oxycodone I took for my nerve #pain provided relief, but it slowed me down. I was working at a manic pace to distract myself, joking on FB & w/my nurse, but now I'm right back at bar with my rapist looking at me like he's hungry. #MentalHealth#Trauma#PTSD#MeToo#ALS
1/3 This week is the anniversary of my rape, and I'm having severe tactile PTSD hallucinations. They are overwhelming me. Days have been manageable with distractions. Nights are filled with terror. #MentalHealth#Trauma#PTSD#MeToo
@David_L_Georges @TavaresSpeer Perfectly said. I like the logical way you unpack the events and emotions of this awful experience without being cold or dismissive. That's quite a feat! I used to be a middle school English #teacher, so I'm all about communication. Feel better, Tavares!
