Helping @consumerfed to #StopTheDebtTrap and #ProtectConsumers
@justicedotorg,@Bonnie4Congress, @AndrewZwicker, and @uchicagocollege alum. Tweets are my own.
Beyond that, the @CFPB is incredibly effective at protecting consumers in the financial marketplace. They have returned $16 billion+ to harmed consumers and 8 in 10 voters support the @CFPB. This ruling has been appealed to SCOTUS, and I hope they rule on the side of consumers
I’m known for being prone to hyperbole… but it’s hard to overstate the potentially catastrophic nature of the 5th circuit’s ruling that deemed the @CFPB’s funding mechanism unconstitutional. If upheld, it could create chaos in the marketplace

The Fifth Circuit's radical & unprecedented decision in CFPB vs. CFSA, if confirmed, would undermine the @CFPB's critical work in protecting consumers & enforcing regulations against deceptive practices by Wall Street & predatory lenders.

Further, the @CFPB’s funding mechanism is not novel. Most federal financial regulators, @SocialSecurity, @MedicareGov, and @fcagov are funded similarly—so the ruling poses a threat to the effectiveness and resilience of a significant portion of our government agencies.

This misguided and unprecedented scheme has devastating and widespread consequences across our federal financial regulatory system. We must protect the @CFPB for consumers and the economy.
I'm watching a hearing about the CFPB's funding. Rep. Barr (R-Ky.) asks witnesses to address "sky is falling concerns" about the SCOTUS case impacting other regulators.
The first GOP witness to speak says... that the funding of other agencies outside approps should be reviewed
What does the financial marketplace look like for #consumers without the @CFPB there to protect them? Check out what #SCOTUS should consider before ruling on the #CFPB funding case!

The convenience, speed, and ease that makes peer to peer payment apps (think Venmo, Zelle, PayPal) so enticing for you and me, also creates a ripe environment for fraudsters and scammers. Read👇 about how to protect yourself

Thank you @JoyceBeatty for asking about credit reporting-- the #1 topic of complaints to the @CFPB. Credit scores impact a person's ability to buy a car, rent an apartment & more. @CFPB holds financial institutions accountable for inaccuracy & misuse of personal data #DefendCFPB
“Consumers are reporting buying more with buy now, pay later than they would otherwise. It’s pushing them into larger purchases that they may not have made otherwise." - @RachelGittleman, CFA's Financial Services Outreach Manager
We all love peer to peer payment apps like Venmo and Zelle— but their ease and speed makes them enticing for us and scammers alike. That’s why there’s a need for more oversight and extending consumer protection laws to sufficiently protect consumers using these new payment forms
Peer-to-peer payment (p2p) apps are popular b/c the platforms are easy for #consumers to use. This convenience also makes p2p apps enticing for scammers & fraudsters b/c there is no delay on transfers - said @RachelGittleman, CFA's Financial Services Outreach Manager
If you are one of the roughly 1/3 of consumers who have an error on their credit report, you might be aware of how convoluted, non responsive and yes, even shoddy, the dispute resolution process can be. 1/3
Credit reporting agencies must investigate and respond to your disputes in a timely manner. But the @CFPB found that the big 3 CRAs provided relief in response to just 2% of complaints. Today @CFPB took a step to ensure that CRAs and information furnishers comply with the law 2/3
