"Proactive care is key to delaying frailty, maintaining independence, and reducing avoidable ill health. We need a more equitable approach to care across the UK." ~ @JKDhesi, BGS President Elect

Wishing all #AHPs a happy #AHPsDay particularly those working with older people. Thank you for the incredible work you do for our communities. To celebrate #AHPsDay2024 and #ChooseGeriatrics, 3 BGS AHP members reflect on their careers so far on our blog. https://t.co/GxNiNaDtYH
Our response to the independent review of the NHS in England by Lord Darzi.
@RobYeldham, director of strategy, policy and engagement said:
'We strongly endorse the calls to expand healthcare in the community and to build care around the needs of the individual. Community rehab is key to this.
'As the report suggests, too many people face delayed access to care. The report highlights growing need for MSK services, impacting on people’s ability to work.
'The report is right to point to the impact of a broken NHS on the economy as well as patients. This landmark report provides a clear route towards rectifying this.
'Community rehab keeps people out of hospital and is essential at a time when more are living with multiple long-term conditions. The recognition of the growing challenge is very welcome.
'These are issues we have been calling for action over for many years. Acting on these findings would transform the NHS into a modern, responsive health service that is built around population need.
'But we need more physios, support workers and other rehab staff to deliver expanded services. So we also welcome the recognition of the pressures our members and other NHS workers face every day.
'As well as ensuring we have more and better-trained staff, the government must ensure the NHS does everything in its power to retain those it already has by addressing stress, workloads and supportive management.'

'Physiotherapy is worth its weight in gold'. 🥇
The value of physiotherapy was raised in a debate in Scottish Parliament to discuss the physiotherapy staffing shortage in the country.

“We see people deteriorating in hospital whilst they’re awaiting community beds, and then further deteriorating when they move to community beds without #rehabilitation. This is inhumane.” BGS President @adamgordon1978 via @HSJnews today #RighttoRehab@thecsp
So our oldest patients are most likely to be stranded in EDs for long lengths of time awaiting admission and by doing so increase risk of delirium. So important system wide change now occurs to end this harm @RCollEM@GeriSoc

Every older person can benefit from rehab in some way: age alone should not bar access. The approach, intensity & pace of rehab should be flexible and adapted if needed for people with delirium, dementia, depression, sensory or communication impairments. https://t.co/LP2fftpV7m
Physiotherapists need to refer people into community based exercise programmes https://t.co/xeFhiqW1CC why? self-selection favours self efficacy -those that need it most don't attend; help scale up #ebp programmes; build 2 way referral. https://t.co/e5o8MtxHTi @AGILECSP@thecsp

Physiotherapists are key in supporting older people to live well. We support people to maintain independence, a sense of self & remaining valued members of their community- as do OT’s, SLTs and Dietitians.
