@MartinSLewis It’s when people have them on speaker to talk, and then hold the speaker up to their ear to listen that gets me 😡! Much easier to use the phone as it should be used 🤣

Woman of the Day doctor and social reformer Susan La Flesche Picotte died OTD 1915 aged 50, in Nebraska, the first Native American woman to earn a medical degree. Her determination to become a doctor was forged as a girl of eight when she stayed with an elderly woman who was in agonising pain, waiting for the doctor to arrive. Four times, a messenger was sent. Each time, the doctor said he’d be there soon. Not long before sunrise, the woman died. It haunted Susan for years to come. She "saw the need of my people [the Omaha] for a good physician."
Susan applied to the Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania: a bold move. Male doctors thought academic stress could make women infertile and their smaller brains made them incapable of medical practice. Susan graduated as class valedictorian: she could suture wounds, deliver babies, treat TB, but as a woman, she could not vote and as a Native American, she was not a citizen under American law.
Susan returned to the Omaha Reservation and set up office in the corner of the schoolyard where she cared for 1,300 patients in a 450 square mile area. Her working days were 20 hours long: treating TB, influenza, cholera and dysentery, making house calls, trying to improve public sanitation, promoting temperance, writing letters for her patients and translating documents for them. Her tiny office, just 12’ x 16’, was more of a community centre. She made house calls on foot, walked miles through wind and snow, on horseback and later in her buggy, travelling for hours to reach a single patient.
Susan persuaded the Office of Indian Affairs to ban alcohol sales within reservation boundaries. She advocated for proper hygiene and the use of screen doors to keep out disease-carrying flies, and waged unpopular campaigns against communal drinking cups. And she gathered enough donations to build a hospital in the reservation town of Walthill, Nebraska, the first modern hospital in the county. She was a trailblazer.
