This map, published in 1856, shows the geology and contours of London.

It is available to view via the BGS maps portal, along with 45,000 high-resolution images of almost all maps produced by the BGS since mapping started in 1832.

Did you know BGS holds records of 1.5 million boreholes? That's a lot of #data.

As part of our commitment to service improvement, a new API was developed last year which makes downloading multi-page PDFS through our borehole layer on the Geoindex quicker & easier than ever.

Today for #LoveData24 we’re looking at our physical collections.

These ‘bluestone’ chips collected in 1893 from the Stonehenge site are still studied today to investigate the stones' origins.

Chips like this are rare, as sampling at historic sites is carefully managed.

We are so excited to share that the Playfair Steps are now open, allowing access from Market Street to East Princes Street Gardens. They will open and close daily in line with the opening hours of Princes Street Gardens throughout the Fringe Festival.

The new portal provides access to over 45,000 BGS maps and includes the following themes:

- geological
- geophysical
- geochemical
- hydrogeological

1:50 000 and 1:63 360 maps of England, Wales and Scotland are available, as well as the 10 000 and 1:10 560 maps.
