The following is in direct response to the comments you made during your appearance on, “The Irish Field.” Namely, “Rather than defending greyhound racing, the horse racing industry [should] probably distance itself more from greyhound racing. I don’t think there’s much comparison between, yes, they’re both animals but greyhounds are muzzled during their racing, they’re not encouraged to socialise…race horses can go out to the paddock, given holidays, they exercise out with other horses…I think it’s completely different.” We respectfully outline our position that your comments are actually inaccurate and misleading for the following reasons.
1. In response to your first query, “Are greyhounds not muzzled in exercise and races?” Similarly to how regular, “domestic,” dog owners are encouraged to place muzzles on their own pets when out in public (e.g., when walking their dogs in parks or public spaces), greyhounds are muzzled only when required (e.g. during races) - not only ensure animal safety, but also to facilitate handler safety through the implementation of an extremely non-invasive and comfortable safe guarding measure.
2. In response to your second query, “Are greyhounds not kept in individual kennels?” No. From when they new-born puppies right through to late adulthood, our greyhounds are housed in a variety of kennel types (not cages) and live in safely-sized groups to encourage socialisation. For clarity, depending on their stage of life/age and time of year, our greyhounds live in a range of different enclosures, not just “kennels.” These enclosures include large enclosed fields, indoor-pens and lamp-heated beds.
3. In response to your third query, “Are they encouraged to socialise with other dogs after they’ve been raised?” Our greyhounds are encouraged to socialise with other dogs, as well as with humans, not only after they are raised but throughout all stages of their life from new-born/puppy stages (where they are kept in their litter alongside their mother until the appropriate age where socialisation can safely begin i.e., until they are fully vaccinated), to adolescence, to adulthood and senior adulthood. We thoroughly enjoy observing their rapid social progression and are acutely aware of the different social demands presented by each stage of our greyhounds’ lives. We are extremely privileged to have abundant space and resources at Townview Kennels to be fully equipped to respond to the different social demands of each different age group/life stage of our dogs.
We are extremely thankful for your queries however, and would be happy to address any other queries or concerns you may have about greyhound racing or our management of greyhounds more generally.
