@desterbrigss@JoJoFromJerz@atrupar Yes, because of course, the only motive anyone could have for locking up Trump would be political.
The political rhetoric just excludes the actual nature of his actions completely and reduces it to an abstract game of tactics. It's truly pathetic.
@JoJoFromJerz@atrupar Really? I'm honestly shocked that he hasn't just been permitted to get away with it completely. We keep seeing commentary saying that Biden might not want to be seen to be locking up a political rival.
@lynnesandgate@nomatestype@Richard_Alonzo@Keir_Starmer I agree. I think there's a lot to learn from Corbyn's stint as leader, and that it's important not to learn the wrong lessons from it. We need to look at where Labour were *before* Corbyn - when we lost an election that should've been easy to win - rather than focusing on 2019.
@Rere131@AhlbergJR@cazarespr@briantylercohen The principle is that the electorate are supposed to be so appalled that they remove them from office. In practice, corruption is so normalised, people just have to convince themselves that "both sides are just as bad" and they can carry on voting GOP.
@Rere131@cazarespr@briantylercohen Sadly true. Politicians prefer "transparency" over regulation because they know a lot of their voters don't care about corruption on their own side.
@OwenJones84 Personally, I'm looking forward to the anti-trans version of Jeremy Irons telling us that same-sex marriage will encourage him to marry his son for tax purposes.
@OwenJones84 As to where we go, these arguments aren't meant to beat us, just to obstruct. Opponents of trans rights know that they're going to lose - they just want to hold off losing for a little longer.
The upside is that, when they lose, it will be in a glorious frothing mess.
@shinyandnew70 Yes, anyone who lived through the 80s and 90s has seen this before. The homophobes at the time all knew that gay equality was inevitable. They just wanted to wield the last bit of power and political influence that they were ever going to have for as long and hard as possible.
@shinyandnew70 I don't think English women are drastically more transphobic than Scottish women. But there's clearly a desire amongst the Rowling mob to convince us (and I suspect specifically to convince *men*) that they are.
@shinyandnew70 This just shows the political cynicism behind the anti-trans movement. They are trying to convince left-leaning people that, if we don't ditch trans rights, we will get a Tory government; and that that will be OUR fault, rather than theirs.
To those posting #IStandWithJKRowling , do yourself a favour: next time you're told a horror story about women being erased by the evil trans people, just take a moment to think "could this just be someone lying to me?"
The answer to that question is always "yes".
@lynnesandgate@nomatestype@Richard_Alonzo@Keir_Starmer Conversely, Chris Leslie received a 20 point increase in his majority in 2017, and foolishly convinced himself that that *wasn't* because of Corbyn, and that he could take those vote with him if he left the Labour Party. He was spectacularly wrong about that.
@PeoplesMomentum I suspect that big Labour donors didn't like the influence that their donations bought them being watered down by the party's relative financial independence. They want a party that needs them to survive.
@lynnesandgate@nomatestype@Richard_Alonzo@Keir_Starmer I don't think it's unreasonable for someone to check what you were saying about the 2019 election in 2019. It's hardly "trawling" and it's not irrelevant when you're making statements about what voters did or didn't thnik at the time.
@DianeKokko@philscully@SharonCooperGC@WomensRightsNet@WRN_NI @sexnotgenderNM It's funny because people who claim to support the rights of women should support the rights of at least ONE of those people, and yet I suspect that they oppose them both.
