Happy birthday to me, happy birthday to me… 🎂 155 years ago today, the first ever international rugby match was played at Raeburn Place in Edinburgh. Scotland won that day… and unknowingly became the first ever holders of a title that’s still moving now.

Is Rugby played in Antartica?

Yes, rugby has been played in Antarctica
for decades as part of an annual tradition known as the Ross Island Cup.

The match typically takes place on a pitch of sea ice near McMurdo Sound, between teams from the neighboring research stations.

The Ice Blacks: Representing New Zealand's Scott Base.

The Mount Terror Rugby Club: Representing the United States' McMurdo Station.

Key Details of the Antarctic Match

The Pitch. Played on sea ice roughly 10 feet thick (about 3 meters). The "grass" is actually groomed snow, prepared using ski field machinery.

Conditions. Matches are often held under the midnight sun in extreme temperatures, sometimes during blizzards or whiteout conditions with winds reaching up to 80 km/h.

Traditions: The New Zealand team famously performs a haka on the ice before the game begins.

History of Dominance. New Zealand has historically dominated the rivalry, once holding a winning streak of 26 consecutive years.
