Akira Kurosawa was said to be so impressed by "The Magnificent Seven" (1960) that he presented director John Sturges with a Ceremonial Sword. However, in an interview in 1966, Kurosawa said that he was disappointed with the movie. He said,

"The American copy of 'Seven Samurai' (1954), is a disappointment, although entertaining. It is not a version of 'Seven Samurai'. I do not know why they call it that."

"The Magnificent Seven" was a commercial failure upon release in the USA, but it was a hit in Europe, especially in Britain, Italy and France. The box office sales climbed in the USA on its re-release.
