There are 2 different ideas are being asserted at the same time:

1. Gender is not limited to two categories.
2. Being recognized as one of those two categories is essential.

I’m genuinely trying to understand the internal logic here.

The argument often starts with: “Gender isn’t binary. It’s a spectrum.”

But then I’m told it’s critically important to recognize that someone has transitioned from female to male (or male to female), and that refusing to use those binary labels is discriminatory.
