That is the part of these books that reaches beyond Stalin and beyond communism. The warning is not that every modern government program, emergency regulation or political disagreement is secretly the beginning of another Soviet terror. Historical analogy becomes meaningless if everything is treated as identical. The warning is about process: how ordinary human beings can gradually accept things they would once have considered unthinkable when fear, ideology and political tribalism persuade them that the people receiving the punishment are fundamentally different from themselves.

It is not ultimately about one political party. It is not left versus right. It is not about finding villains in history so that our own group can declare itself morally immune. No political tribe possesses that immunity. The danger begins when indoctrination and propaganda divide ordinary people so deeply that they stop recognizing one another as neighbors, coworkers, friends and fellow human beings and begin seeing one another primarily as categories of enemies.

That transformation does not require everyone to become cruel. It requires enough people to become indifferent. A person does not necessarily have to demand that his neighbor be silenced; he merely has to decide that he does not care because his neighbor belongs to the wrong group. He does not have to confiscate the property himself; he merely has to believe the person losing it deserves what is happening. He does not have to pull the trigger; he merely has to stop asking what happened after the person disappeared.

This is why propaganda’s most dangerous achievement is not making everyone believe the same fact. It is teaching people whom they no longer have to care about.

Once society is sufficiently divided, people seeking unchecked power gain an extraordinary advantage. Neighbors monitor neighbors instead of institutions. Citizens celebrate when authorities punish the opposing side. Each camp becomes willing to surrender another principle because it believes the temporary sacrifice will hurt its enemies more than itself. Censorship becomes acceptable when the censored opinion is offensive enough. Collective punishment becomes acceptable when the punished group is unpopular enough. Due process becomes an inconvenience when the accused person is frightening enough.

And every surrendered principle establishes a precedent that does not necessarily remain confined to its original target.

That is why history’s darkest chapters rarely begin with a government announcing, “Today we begin tyranny.” They begin with words that sound responsible: necessity, safety, justice, emergency, security, progress, stability, public welfare, the greater good. Some of those concerns may even be genuine. The danger appears when the existence of a genuine problem is used to place power beyond scrutiny.

That is what makes the documents behind The Harvest of Sorrow so haunting. Consider them separately: a procurement quota, a search for hidden grain, a law protecting collective property, a blacklist for communities failing government requirements, restrictions on railway travel. None contains the words “starve millions of human beings.” Each can be written in bureaucratic language.

But history requires us to place the papers beside one another.

A quota demands the grain. A search finds what remains. A law punishes the person who takes some back. A blacklist isolates the village that still cannot comply. Hunger drives people toward the railway. Another order restricts the railway.

Suddenly the individual papers become walls.

And the population is inside them.

So there really was a serious international intellectual movement—before Coleman wrote his book—thinking about whether indefinite population and economic growth was physically sustainable.

We absolutely need to talk about Lenin being sponsored by the Germans. Because if we don’t talk about it, you won’t understand that German policy, and European policy in general, or Western policy toward Russia, has been a nonstop effort to pressure and ultimately destroy Russia as a state.

These powers could compete with each other, fight each other, and pursue completely different interests. But there was one objective around which they always find common ground: destroying Russia.

Only then does it become crystal clear how and why Lenin created Ukraine, which was the direct extension of the Austro-Hungarian anti-Russia project.

If we don't talk about Lenin being sponsored by Germany, we won't pay attention to the principle of selective "self-determination" that the West has repeatedly used to dissolve countries it considers inconvenient. It was the Russian Empire, then Austria-Hungary, and later Yugoslavia.

Lenin himself championed self-determination for everyone up until the moment it came to Russian self-determination. The same selective principles we see the West applying today. When it becomes inconvenient, self-determination suddenly means nothing.

Notice how the same principle was never applied consistently to the people of Northern Ireland or Scotland, nor to separatist movements in Spain, French Polynesia, American Samoa, and so on.

So if we don’t speak about Lenin being sponsored by Germany, we’re also not going to understand how a powerful country like Imperial Russia in 1914 was subjected to a coup d’état backed by Western powers seeking to preserve their own hegemony and expand the emerging global financial system.

And later, without understanding this, you won’t understand the reasons behind the Second World War. Stalin came to power and reversed the course of the early Bolsheviks. The West did not like that. Western industrialists financed Hitler, while Britain and France handed him Czechoslovakia, one of Europe’s major arms-producing centers at the time.

You also won’t understand the reasons behind the decades of anti-Stalin propaganda and brainwashing you have been exposed to.

But once you understand this, you will start understanding the reasons behind the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the reasons behind what we are dealing with today, and the same playbook for maintaining influence that the West has used for centuries.
