As heartening as this day was, as I took my oath as a Member of the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka, it was impossible to ignore the government's violent crackdown on young people. The lathi-charge, the tear gas, the electric shocks, and the utter contempt with which peaceful protesters were treated on the streets leading to Parliament were deeply agonising.
Politics should compel us to uphold justice. That is what Parliament - the highest institution of our democracy - must constantly remind us.
But if this is how the government chooses to begin this session of Parliament, it sends a chilling message: that the government would rather unleash violence than accept responsibility, and would rather sacrifice the lives and futures of countless young people than remove an incompetent minister.
Dharmendra Pradhan must resign.
well done omar janab ❤️👍
#WATCH | Monsoon session of Parliament | Delhi: Congress leader Pawan Khera says, “Where else should protests be held if not outside Parliament? Naturally, we will protest where you can see and hear us—after all, you are supposed to listen to the voice of the people. When the youth of the country come to your doorstep to make their voices heard and express their outrage, you get scared. What kind of democracy is this? Accept our demands: have Dharmendra Pradhan resign, ensure transparency in exams, and stop playing with the future of the youth—then you will receive full cooperation…”

#WATCH | "We wanted to protest peacefully, but they made us a target of tear gas. Democracy is being strangled," says Omar Abdullah.
"We have come to our national capital to demand our rights. Unfortunately, they are not allowing us to protest peacefully. Democracy is being strangled. There are at most 100 of us who have come from Jammu and Kashmir with the hope that we would be allowed to protest peacefully at Jantar Mantar and demand our rights from the Central government. We also wanted to remind the Centre of the promise it made on the floor of Parliament and before the Supreme Court to restore statehood to J&K after the elections. The Supreme Court had directed the Centre to restore statehood to J&K as soon as possible. If they do not want to adhere to the Supreme Court's directions, they should say so openly—that they will not restore statehood to J&K. We will then decide our course of action."

"These children are the future of India. They are demanding their rights, and we stand with them. The Government of India should pay attention to their concerns. At the same time, it should also address the issues of Ladakh."
"We wanted to protest peacefully, but they made us a target of tear gas. Democracy is being strangled," says J&K CM Omar Abdullah.
