I spent SO much time whining that nothing was happening in my query process and I was dying for any sort of news... then I got three rejections in a day LMAO
Hundreds of pro-democracy protesters, journalists arrested & beaten in Kazakhstan over rigged elections. Barely makes news—and it'll stay that way so long as Chevron and BP continue making bank there. https://t.co/IZUALqvsi9
To be clear— Im in Istanbul rn waiting for my connecting flight back to the states as inauguration takes place in KZ, but unrest began on Sunday when the election took place.
Please remember there are people striving for the rights we take for granted.
Vote. Every time.
I saw peaceful protestors arrested, media blackouts, and heavy military and police presence following the illegitimate election in Kazakhstan. It’s humbling and scary. I never fully understood the privilege inherent to being an American until now. Keep KZ in your thoughts.
Idk what I thought would happen when I started paying $6 a night for a 12 bed co-Ed hostel room but long story short there’s an entire soccer team of 9 year olds sleeping here
It’s a real testament to Kazakh people and post-Soviet vodka that I, a tone-deaf monolingual, am rolling into my hostel at 4 am after a night of Russian karaoke
Almaty is wonderful & occasionally tricky to navigate with no Russian skills— for example I really needed to pee at my university & pointing at my crotch & saying “bathroom?” didnt work so that’s why I now carry around a sticky note with a badly drawn toilet on it just in case
