I think Rushdie is wrong to compare the support for the RSS among a section of Hindu Americans to the historic support Irish Americans extended to the IRA (and Irish nationalism/Republicanism more generally). Whatever its methods, the IRA was an anti-colonial organisation and the goal of Republicanism has always been for a united Ireland in which the Irish people would enjoy equality. The RSS was a pro-colonial organisation that, after 1947, has actively worked to disunite Indians and promote the Hindutva ideal of a de facto second class citizenship for non-Hindu Indians.
