SUGAR PRICES RISE: WHY ETHANOL IS NOT TO BLAME
HERE'S THE CENTRE'S PoV:
โข Sugar rose from โน48.18/kg on July 20 to โน55.70/kg on August 20.
โข The Centre says the spike is not because of ethanol diversion.
โข Sugar diverted for ethanol actually fell from ~12% in 2022-23 to ~9% in 2025-26.
โข Nearly three-fourths of Indiaโs ethanol now comes from grains, especially maize.
โข Sugar production is expected at 306 LMT, below the initial 343 LMT estimate.
โข Red Rot, Top Borer and waterlogging have hit sugarcane output.
โข Festive-season demand, global supply tightening, speculation and hoarding are also pushing prices up.
โข Global sugar prices jumped 16%, from $474/tonne to $552/tonne since June 30.
โข Yet India has adequate stocks to meet domestic demand until the October crushing season.
โข Ethanol diversion has helped mills manage surplus sugar, improving their finances and farmer payments.
โข 97% of 2025-26 sugarcane dues have already been paid; industry subsidies have also fallen sharply since 2021.
โข The Centre is acting: 400-tonne dealer stock limits, inspections, duty-free import of 10 LMT raw sugar and earlier crushing to boost festive-season supply.
