This procedure is called rubber band ligation. Doctors use it for internal piles( hemorrhoids) that sit inside and cause bleeding, itching or a feeling of fullness.

A short scope lets the doctor see the pile. A small tool then places a tight rubber band around its base. The band cuts off the blood supply. Over the next few days the pile shrinks, dies, and falls off by itself. You usually do not feel the band, because it sits above the part of the anus that senses pain.

Most people go home the same day. Mild pressure is common for a day or two. A little bleeding can appear when the tissue drops away, often around day five to seven. Simple pain relief is usually enough. Heavy bleeding, fever, or trouble passing urine needs a quick call to the doctor.

It works well for many grade two and grade three internal piles. Piles that stay outside all the time need a different treatment. More than one visit may be needed if several piles are present.
