#Lincoln’s private secretary John George Nicolay was born #OnThisDay in Bavaria in 1832. While living in Pittsfield, Illinois, he worked for the Illinois Secretary of State. He was later appointed by Lincoln to be his secretary, a role he would fill until Lincoln’s death.

#AbrahamLincoln arrived in Washington, D.C., #OnThisDay in 1861 after a 12-day journey from Springfield. He had to sneak into the city due to the risk of assassination, and his critics seized the opportunity to caricature him in disguises he supposedly wore.
