New Jersey Cost of Living Crisis Worsens in 2026
If your paycheck feels thinner every month, you're not alone. New Jersey's cost of living has spiked again this year, remaining one of the highest in the nation
The Big Picture: Living in NJ costs 12% more than the national average
A single person needs about $2,772 per month for basics (rent, groceries, gas, etc.)
A family of four faces a staggering $6,104 per month
Overall costs rose 3.2% year-over-year, driven heavily by housing and energy
Housing – The Biggest Pain Point
Rents are 32% above the national average
Median one-bedroom apartment: $2,084/month
Jersey City downtown: $2,700–$3,400
Hoboken: $2,800–$3,500
Newark (near transit): $1,700–$2,300
Median home price: $505,000 (up 5.4% from last year)
Other Key Increases:
Groceries:
Families spend $1,404/month (8% above national average)
Singles: ~$274/week
Auto insurance: $1,523/year ($264 above national avg)
Healthcare: Employees pay $2,057/year in premiums (vs. $1,640 nationally)
These numbers add up fast, rent, food, transport, and healthcare alone can easily exceed $4,600/month for a family before utilities, childcare, or savings
New Jersey consistently ranks among the priciest states, and 2026 has made it tougher for families to stay, save, or get ahead
Many are asking: How do we afford to live here? What’s hitting your budget hardest in NJ right now?
Remember that those in Trenton are highly responsible for this, never forget how badly their decisions affect how much things cost here

Republican NJ Assemblywoman Dawn Fantasia BLASTS Democrats for trying to pass a laws that target federal agents and interfere with immigration law.
“For the love of God and all that is good. Can you differentiate between the fact that we don't make laws that control the federal government?!... My fifth-grade middle school English student would get that!"
@EricLDaugh Newark NJ receives over $1.3B in funding from outside the district, all while having some of the worst reading/math scores in the state
Meanwhile red areas are chopping trees down, closing schools and laying off staff to pay the bills, it's insane

🚨 HOLY CRAP! A fraud scandal is BLOWING UP at Newark, New Jersey schools
Over a quarter BILLION federal dollars surged to the district meant to address learning loss, but it had basically NO IMPACT
"This person received the no-show contract, and this person was a close friend of an assistant superintendent of Newark Public Schools."
Funds have flown to a "literary consultant," partly using federal dollars, yet 1 year later, "THE WORK NEVER BEGAN"
"Money is being blown on things that have little to nothing to do with student outcomes, academic improvement and student support! This is the TIP OF THE ICEBERG."
THIS IS INSANE! The fraud is everywhere. Bring on the prosecutions!
Notice there wasn't a priority to fix electric bills and the unaffordability here for the Sherill administration
Just protect illegals, demonize ICE and bash Trump constantly, they look like 🤡

Mikie Sherrill is blaming Trump for budget problems here in New Jersey after reporting a $3 Billion Structural Deficit & years of failure by Democrats
It's interesting she says $7.2 Billion in this, ironically that's the amount NJ spends on illegals here
Commie Mayor Zohran Mamdani REFUSES to push charges against the thugs who HOSPITALIZED NYPD officers and caused real injuries during the blizzard chaos!
His excuse? “It was just a snowball fight.”
NYC has 3 years and 10 months with this commie.
Zohran Mamdani and AOC just put out a video promoting FREE DAYCARE for illegal aliens... completely in Spanish.
Democrats are taking Americans' money and spending it on foreign invaders.
Mamdani is now offering taxpayer funded babysitting for illegal aliens while he raises taxes on middle class American citizens, defunds the police, and refuses to condemn criminals who attack NYPD cops.
Things are going to get so much worse in NYC.
Strap in.
WOW. NJ Gov. Mikie Sherrill has sent up an official state-funded portal on the NJ Attorney General website encouraging NJ residents to dox and report ICE agents.
The portal allows people to submit videos, pictures, and other information about ICE officers, while also linking to a "Know Your Rights" resource page designed to help illegals avoid ICE arrest.
