more context from pinedappl3: if you were wondering why they immediately ran to their cars-it's because this part of Japan is much less seismically active and has little history with major tsunamis. That's part of why people in the Noto Peninsula were caught so off guard. To make matters worse, the entire family was sick with the flu at the time, which made evacuating even harder. They were also trapped, since all the exit roads had been blocked by collapsed houses from the intense shaking just minutes earlier. Despite all this, everyone in the family survived. The daughter even went into cardiac arrest for several minutes but was successfully resuscitated.
