With vital records from land deeds to provincial archives potentially lost to the flames, the incident exposed the critical and longstanding vulnerability of paper-based record-keeping systems. Maite Manganye, president of the South African Society of Archivists, says funding is needed to ensure all important documents are digitally archived.

When BANOMOYA was song of the year end of 2018, I got a call for interview on a community radio station in KZN, Inanda fm; on the other line they had a father who had just lost her 6-year old daughter exactly as the midnight fireworks were blowing up in the moments when the song was playing on the radio. She had loved the song so much that she had been voting on her mom’s phone for it, hoping it would ‘win’.

Someone was firing random gunshots in the air & she got hit by a stray bullet. And that was her life, ended. In a joyous moment. Celebrating. Anticipating. Surrounded by loud love & joy. Gone.

Kgotso is a learner at Meriti Secondary School in Meriting near Rustenburg.
She has been missing since Tuesday, after she left home to attend a friend’s party and never returned.

According to the family, she went to visit her friend Ofentse, who resides at Meriting Extension 2.

Anyone who has seen Kgotso or has information that may assist in locating her is urgently requested to contact her aunt on 072 760 4417.
