Somente a internet proporcionou a quebra disso. É liberdade contra tirania.
🇧🇷 I moved to Brazil four years ago as my life in Europe became increasingly complicated due to my public stance on Covid. I quickly fell in love with this country, its cheerful people, natural diversity, and climate.
As a resident of Brazil, I am highly concerned about the current developments in my new homeland. I am appalled by the suppression of freedom of speech, both online and offline, and how the Supreme Court is increasingly consolidating power. However, living here allows me to voice my opinion on recent events and politically advocate for what I deem crucial: INDIVIDUAL LIBERTIES AND FREEDOM OF SPEECH.
Yesterday evening, I saw several tweets from Brazilian and international accounts discussing the political division of this country into communist and democratic parts. I am not in favor of splitting up existing countries as the process could devolve into violent conflicts. Out of curiosity, I ASKED my followers what they think about the ongoing debate to divide Brazil into a socialist banana republic and a democratic part.
The discussion under the post was very civilized until some socialist/communist accounts found it, shared it, and accused me of trying to divide the country. The replies and DMs I received in the last 12 hours are shocking, to say the least:
▪️One user called me a fascist and demanded that I be lynched like Mussolini.
▪️Another socialist called me a motherfucker and said I should be hanged like a pig after slaughter.
▪️Another user suggested my mother should be murdered and cut into two pieces.
▪️Another 'antifascist' called for my pursuit and elimination in Brazil.
These statements have received hundreds of likes including wild insults against me. However, these are the same people who publicly, under the guise of fighting ‘hate speech’, demand the censorship of all conservative accounts that dare criticize their demigod Lula or @alexandre.
I am a free speech absolutist. I believe that everyone should be able to express their personal opinion, no matter how absurd it may seem to others. I tolerate almost everything. You can insult me, make fun of me, and think I’m absolutely stupid. But my red line is calls for murder and violence against me and my family. That’s where the fun stops and justice gets immediately involved.
Hospitality looks different. In few of the countries I have been to, such behavior from self-declared ‘tolerant’ antifascists would be tolerated at all (with the exception of Germany, where it is even worse). After today’s events, I can only say: In a country where dissenters are treated like this and freedom of speech is trampled on, I find it increasingly difficult to envision a long-term future here.
And to the antifascists: you have become what you claim to hate.
