It is worth noting that after their meeting in Moscow, Fico and Putin did not issue joint statements or respond to media questions. They simply cannot say publicly anything about what they discussed in the meeting. They are afraid of the public's reaction.
Moscow provides significant discounts to Fico, but Slovakia pays for them. Such discounts are not free—payments to Russia are made through sovereignty or murky schemes. This should be a matter of concern for Slovakia's law enforcement and special services.
Details about such financing were revealed during a recent meeting of European leaders in Brussels. Leaders observed that Mr. Fico does not want to participate in the common European work on energy independence or seek replacement for Russian gas, but rather wants to assist Russia in pushing American gas and energy resources of other partners away from Europe, implying that he wants to help Putin earn money to fund the war and weaken Europe.
We are losing people as a result of the war that Putin started, and we believe that such assistance to Putin is immoral.
Mr. Fico even refused compensations to ease the transition period and get rid of dependence, meaning it is not a security issue for him. He is interested specifically in the Russian gas and the matter’s worth is 500 million U.S. dollars per year. Other profits come from the oil pipe that runs through the Ukrainian territory and gives another 500 million U.S. dollars per year, which helps Mr. Fico.
That is why his key goal is to deal with Russia, and this is what benefits him. This is indeed a big security issue — both for Slovakia and the entire Europe. Why is this leader so dependent on Moscow? What is being paid to him, and what does he pay with?
Another solid piece of evidence of Russia’s war crimes against Ukraine and Ukrainians is the Yale HRL study. Yale researchers have identified hundreds of Ukrainian children from the Donetsk and Luhansk regions who have been abducted by Russia since February 2022, as well as their locations and the deportation routes used.
148 children are already listed in Russian child placement databases, 42 of whom have already been adopted, placed under guardianship, or assigned Russian custodians. Another 166 children have been placed with Russian families. The report demonstrates to the entire world the extent of Russia’s actions to erase Ukrainian identity and how systematic its policy is in this regard.
Ukraine is tirelessly working to ensure our children return home and that all those responsible for these heinous crimes are punished. This is a challenging task, but we are doing everything in our power. We are deeply grateful to everyone who is helping us— every countries, organization, leader, both political and public.
Only together can we restore the justice Russia has violated on such a massive scale, protect the future of Ukrainian children, and bring them back home.

This week, air raid alerts have sounded almost daily across Ukraine. Just last night, our air defense forces managed to shot down nearly 50 strike drones. Over the past week, Russia has launched more than 800 guided aerial bombs, around 460 strike drones, and over 20 missiles of various types against Ukraine and our people.
Ukraine is not a testing ground for weapons. Ukraine is a sovereign and independent state. Yet, Russia persists in its attempts to destroy our people, sow fear and panic, and weaken us.
Ukraine needs more air defense systems, and we are actively working with our partners on this. Strengthening the protection of our skies is absolutely critical.
I thank everyone around the world who understands this and continues to stand with Ukraine.
Today, more details have been revealed about the new missile that Russia used to strike Dnipro. These details will be shared with international journalists and media because the world must know the truth. It must understand that the only party that does not want peace is Russia. That is why Russia is constantly escalating.
I am grateful to all partners who have already responded to this latest act of Russian madness. But words alone are not enough—action is required. In response, Ukraine’s Minister of Defense, under my directive, is already meeting with partners to secure advanced air defense systems—systems capable of protecting lives against these new threats.
When a country starts using other nations not only as targets for terror but also as testing grounds for its new missiles through acts of terror, it is undoubtedly an international crime. Russia’s actions mock the calls for restraint by states like China, leaders of the Global South, and others. Each time these voices call for peace, Moscow responds with yet another escalation.
The world must respond firmly and decisively so that Putin fears expanding this war and faces real consequences for his actions. True peace can only be achieved through strength—there is no other way.
Today, Putin admitted to taking a second step this year toward escalating and expanding this war. A new ballistic missile was used. Putin struck our city of Dnipro, one of Ukraine’s largest cities. This is a clear and severe escalation in the scale and brutality of this war—a cynical violation of the UN Charter by Russia. Let me emphasize: this is already Russia’s second step toward escalation this year. The first was involving North Korea in the war against Ukraine with a contingent of at least 11,000 soldiers.
Putin has taken both of these steps while ignoring everyone in the world who is calling for no further expansion of the war. He disregards calls from China, Brazil, European countries, the United States, and others. Putin alone started this war—an entirely unprovoked war—and he is doing everything to prolong it, now for over a thousand days.
The use of a ballistic missile against Ukraine today is yet more proof that Russia has no interest in peace. Putin lies when he claims that Ukraine’s use of long-range weapons is somehow a new step for us. This is not the first time we have used such weapons, and we have every right to do so under international law. Our right to self-defense is the same as that of any other nation. And when Russian missiles hit our cities, when Iranian “Shaheds” attack Ukraine every night, when a North Korean contingent is deployed on our borders, Putin is not only prolonging the war—he is spitting in the face of those in the world who genuinely want peace to be restored.
The world must respond. Right now, there is no strong reaction from the world. Putin is very sensitive to this. He is testing you, dear partners. It is clear who the sole culprit of this war is—who started it on February 24th and who continues to pour all resources into its continuation. He must be stopped. A lack of tough reactions to Russia’s actions sends a message that such behavior is acceptable. This is what Putin is doing.
Putin must feel the cost of his deranged ambitions. Response is needed. Pressure is needed. Russia must be forced into real peace, which can only be achieved through strength. Otherwise, there will be endless Russian strikes, threats, and destabilization—not just against Ukraine.
True peace is worth fighting for. Action is required.
Thank you to everyone who is helping.
