This is going to be an unpopular take for Americans but… Trump’s tariffs got Carney elected. Canada was going to vote in @PierrePoilievre and he was going to win. He’s someone Trump could have worked with. And he could’ve fixed up Canada.
Losing Canada to Carney vs. Poilievre is seemingly making the US lose its Northern border to China and Europe. Which seems like a very bad idea. People are cheering about the US and its deals with Greenland, but what about the giant northern border that’s lost?
When Trump tried to negotiate with Carney more recently, Carney actually wanted to work with him, but when he brought the deal back to the Premiers in Canada (head of the provinces), they said no, they’d make his life miserable if he worked with Trump, and Carney catered to them. Which was a huge mistake Poilievre wouldn’t have made.
The Premiers (other than Saskatchewan and Alberta) like keeping Trump as the bad guy because their provinces are suffering so badly it’s easier to blame him than themselves.
Anyway. I was really excited for Poilievre to win and turn the country around and Trump hurt Canadians with tariffs, right before an election and got Carney elected. Whether people like to admit it or not, that’s what happened.
I don’t get why tariffs had to happen then. He could’ve implemented tariffs after Poilievre won. And then he’d have an ally as his northern border… people like to laugh at Canada and it does have no population compared to the US but it is the northern border and that seems to be overlooked.
Canada isn’t Mexico. It never has been. It was an ally.
I’m sure this’ll be unpopular but I don’t get it. If someone has an explanation for my that was a good idea, let me know because genuinely I don’t understand it.
We were so close to having a conservative leader. Canada could be blossoming. Trump could’ve had his tariffs a bit later (or not because Poilievre would’ve worked with him). And the northern border wouldn’t be negotiating with the EU.
