Dale Lloyd II, Rice University, 2006. His death led to the NCAA's mandatory sickle cell trait screening — Division I in 2010, Division II in 2012, Division III in 2013.
C.J. Dickey, Bucknell, 2024. Eighteen years old. Tested positive for sickle cell trait pre-camp. Died of exertional rhabdomyolysis after a conditioning session. His family filed suit against Bucknell weeks later.
Two cases, eighteen years apart, on opposite ends of the same policy.
The first tells us the test matters. ⚖️The second tells us the test alone isn't enough.
A 2020 epidemiological review in the Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine found 10 SCT-associated exertional deaths in Division I football in the 12 years before the 2010 bylaw, and 1 in the 8 years after.
The screening works. But "works" was always the floor, not the ceiling.
What sits between a positive test and a safe practice is a series of conversations — with the athlete, with their position coach, with the strength staff, with the parents when they ask. Those conversations are not optional.
They are the policy, policy I have written.
If a department can produce the test result but cannot produce a record of those conversations, the policy is half-built.
What does your department do in the 48 hours after a positive SCT result lands?
Not sure? Let’s have a discussion [email protected]
