Scientists have a test they use when they need to stress a normal person out on purpose. It works on more than 7 out of 10 people, and this speed date stream basically copied the recipe, then added a button so chat could kick him out.
It's called the Trier Social Stress Test, and labs have been running it since 1993. You walk into a room where a panel of judges and a video camera are waiting for you. The judges are trained to stare back with blank faces and give you nothing at all. Then you have to give a speech. For most people, cortisol, the body's main stress hormone, shoots up to two to four times where it started.
Back in 2004, a pair of California researchers went through 208 stress studies to figure out what actually gets to people. It came down to two things showing up together. Somebody's judging you, and you can't control how it turns out. Either one alone only nudges your stress up a bit. When both are in the room at once, the response gets almost three times bigger, and it takes longer to come back down than anything else they looked at.
Now go back and watch this clip.
He's on camera trying to impress a woman, and there's a meter at the bottom of the screen where chat votes live on whether he gets kicked. Even the scientists keep their judges quiet, and this setup hands them a live meter to vote him out with.
The part of your brain you need on a date is the front part, the one that comes up with words and reads the other person's face. That's also the first thing your body shuts down once it decides you're under threat. Yale neuroscientist Amy Arnsten has spent her career showing that even mild stress you can't control floods that area with chemicals that knock it offline, and the older fight-or-flight wiring takes over. So the harder he tries to think of something to say, the less brain he's got left to say it with.
That's where looksmaxxing runs into a wall it can't mew its way past. Whatever's going on with his jaw, the alarm that went off in that chair only settles down with practice. Therapists treat social anxiety by starting small, a quick hello and then a short conversation, and working up from there so your body slowly learns nothing bad is coming. Throwing a nervous guy straight into a streamed date with a kick button skips the whole ladder.
When psychologists put volunteers through this test, an ethics board has to sign off first, and somebody sits down with you afterward to explain what just happened to your body. This guy got put through it with a live audience and a kick button instead.
This was already expressed by Seneca who said that if you are trying to distinguish yourself with your strength, an ox will always be stronger than you. So work on being maximally human.
Don't succumb to the hindsight fallacy.
A more sophisticated version of HP probably would not have made Rowling eleventy-billion dollars, yes.
But HP exactly as she wrote it would probably not have made her eleventy-billion dollars, either.
Things weren't necessarily inevitable, or even likely, just because they happened. Not unless you believe the universe is a game of billiards, with the cue ball already struck and in motion, and every else simply a matter of physics.
But if that's true, chiding people about what they write or read is both useless and inevitable, because everything is predestined.
Every good artist knows that a masterpiece is partially an accident, and that even a masterpiece doesn't necessarily sell.
We practice our crafts anyway, not because we labor under the delusion that we have absolute control over our destinies, but because that is how we control the part we can control.
You make the most beautiful thing you can, and what happens, happens.
Joanne Rowling has done us a particular favor in this respect, because she's done the opposite of George Martin. She made her millions and kept writing. "Robert Galbraith", the name under which Rowling writes detective novels in the classic British tradition, has sold a lot of books because it's no secret who Robert really is, but they haven't set the world on fire in nearly the same way.
Even with the same set of writing skills, given more time to mature, and even with the boost of her prior reputation, lightning did not strike in quite the same way twice.
And I think Rowling would be the first to agree that this is to be expected. It doesn't mean she's somehow over rated. It just means that readers are complex people, too, and they insert just as much unpredictability into the equation.
Hell, even Tolkien was always at the top of his game, much less anyone else's. The first half of Fellowship of the Ring has no idea what it is or where it's going, which is why we get treated to Tom Bambodil, and the internal monologue of a fox.
Think of it as if you were shooting at a 5 inch plate at 1000 yards. That shot exceeds the mechanical accuracy of a modern rifle, so you have to get lucky to make it. But that doesn't mean skill doesn't matter.
You have to be a skilled marksman in order to even get close enough to be lucky.
In order for any author to retain his sanity, he has to accept this and focus on writing what he's inclined to write, and giving readers something to love.
If lightning strikes, great.
If it doesn't, you can still build an audience, go full time, and make a living doing the best job anyone ever had, which is telling stories.
That's the real prize. And the only one you can predictably claim.
LOTR might genuinely be one of the greatest things humans have ever put on a screen and I’m not even exaggerating. You can watch it as a kid and think it’s about hobbits and swords and this terrifying ring. Then you watch it as an adult and realize it’s basically about everything that actually matters.
Power corrupts people and evil usually starts really small..Good people can be tempted and courage isn’t about being fearless. Friendship can literally carry you when you can’t carry yourself anymore. The smallest person in the room can change the course of history. You do the right thing not because you know you’re going to win, but because it’s the right thing to do.
Honestly… I think it should be mandatory viewing for kids at some point. Not just “watch the movie” but actually dissect it. Why does Boromir fail? Why can Sam resist what other people can’t? Why does Frodo show Gollum mercy? Why is Aragorn a good leader when he spends half the story reluctant to have power? What happens when someone becomes consumed by resentment, fear, or the desire to control other people? Then make kids apply those questions to their own lives. Friendship, temptation, loyalty, courage, responsibility, choosing who you want to be when nobody is forcing you to choose correctly. There are probably more useful lessons about becoming a decent human being buried in those movies than in half the stuff we make kids memorize in school…and those are learnings and lessons that would stick and could carry you through all of life.
My favorite part is that the heroes aren’t these invincible characters either. They’re tired, scared, tempted, and completely outmatched. Half the time they have no idea what they’re doing but they just keep going….
Then somehow Peter Jackson took ALL of THAT and made three epic movies at the same time, filled them with real sets, real landscapes, thousands of extras, incredible music,… and made something that still looks better than movies being made with $200M budgets 25 years later.
I really don’t think we’ll ever get another thing like it.
This argument has been substantially undermined by the recent progress. DeepSeek made Ascend viable, Moore Threads have a model for translating CUDA kernels to MUSA, generally switching compute platforms is becoming easy.
Jensen missed his window for strangling the competition.

Bend 2 is here!
It is a new programming language that blocks AI mistakes via *proof checking* - the same technique big AI labs used to solve open math problems, like Navier-Stokes.
It is also very fast, and runs on GPUs.

So two good things:
1) LLMs threaten the performative aspect of mathematics as a competitive spectator sport limited to a narrow group of savantic misfits.
2) LLMs help spread mathematical knowledge by favoring mathematically adept nonnerdy nonsavantic users.
Still thinking about those researchers in Antarctica who isolated themselves for 120 days & still got the flu (all symptoms) despite no other animals or people around them.
They never found an explanation 🤔
You're missing the core drama of the story: Tristan is softly accusing OpenAI of having stolen their result from Codex chat logs.
Tristan then claims OpenAI tried to threaten him to not publicly disclose this, and that they'd give him the Clay Prize ($1M) as the "closest humans to the problem" if he'd agree to disavow his co-author, @__alpoge__ , who is at Anthropic.
This is HBO-level drama, but with math proofs.
Friedrich Nietzsche, yes that Nietzsche, was convinced that the story was real while his classmates insisted that it couldn’t be true.
He attempted to prove that the story could be true, and he held his outstretched palm over a book of burning matches without expression of pain and was only saved from serious harm by the school's prefect.
He was 12 years old.
