British Army records confirm that 22% of the Indian Army was made up of Sikhs at the outset of the War, even though Sikhs were only 2% of the Indian population. An estimated 100,000 Sikhs served in active combat roles, including in France, Belgium, Gallipoli, Mesopotamia, Egypt, and East Africa. Thousands made the ultimate sacrifice.

They were widely regarded as amongst the bravest troops in the Imperial Army. Their service is an important historic reference point for young Sikhs in Canada to renew the proud Sikh military tradition in the Canadian Armed Forces.
