Its almost like watching states with a lot of tobacco farms force their citizens to invest in cigarette companies.

This is essentially an uncounted subsidy for the fossil fuel industry.

Wait, the NYT bought the clone of Lingo for over a million dollars?
Last time I talked about Wordle being a clone of Lingo, lots of people defended it because it wasn't trying to make money.
Now it's a "low-seven figures" clone.

@MrJamesMarion I agree with you that there is a meaningful difference. The "charging money" part is the main problem with these clones. Also the "using the same title" part.
But your "using an existing mechanic" statement is a bit too nice to Wordle. Here is a screenshot of Lingo on android:

Lots of talk about Wordle clones, but very little talk about Wordle being a clone of an existing game show. It's almost exactly the same as Lingo (which modified the paper game Jotto). Not okay to steal the title "Wordle." But cloning the mechanics? Sure!

@boardtobits I deleted the tweet this responded to because I had said "I think the Wordle clones are pretty terrible" but I think I'm back to being okay with them. Clone of a clone. Not what I want to do with my life, but not ready to call them terrible.

@boardtobits I agree that it's scummy to jump into "let's clone this game that cloned an older tv show." But is the original clone okay just because the TV show is dated? Even though the TV show already has an app?
The fact that Wordle is not trying to make money does make it a bit better.

@boardtobits I think that the mechanic design jump from Bulls and Cows (which Mastermind copies, I guess?) to Jotto to Lingo is more interesting the the almost non-existent jump to Wordle.
The improved social features and UX design are nice, I guess. Making it a daily word is interesting.

I find it frustrating that major sites write about this cloning issue without mentioning Lingo. Is it a lack of research, or do people not consider Wordle a direct copy of Lingo?

It's hard to set the line between "twist on a mechanic" and clone. Using the word "Wordle" in your title is obviously wrong. Making 2048 is obviously wrong. Cloning a game that is a clone of another game? They should feel bad toward the creators of Lingo or Jotto.
