Not long ago i used to be the youngest in most rooms, at many things.
Now at a MBA college when 25 year olds call me sir, the thing that hits me most is damn, where did my youth go, life is short, even if nothing crazy happens...
The first step to fixing Indian sports is putting sportspeople in charge of sports federations. Out of 63 vice presidents across major sports federations only 6 have a sporting background. We allocated ~4480 crore annually to sports yet local stadiums remain dilapidated and athletes struggle financially. We’ve to replace self nomination and insider voting with athlete led elections. Olympians and athletes who've represented India should have the right to elect federation members and choose people who actually understand what it takes to compete at the highest level.
If we want better outcomes, we’ve to put decision making in the hands of people who’ve lived the sport. Else we’ll always keep debating medals instead of building a system that produces them.
The Kolkata stories the mainstream media won’t highlight. Sports facilities under flyovers. We even have chess academies set up under bridges. Few cities can match the genuine sports culture of Kolkata. #BestBengal https://t.co/lTNfqkvzC1
Agreed! a lot more can be done if space/infra is utilized to max potential. A multi sporting facility (exists in most countries) might be another way to optimize potential. Diversifying resources so we grow across the spectrum not just bat & ball(cricket&football)!
Kolkata 💪❤️
This clip of sports facilities created by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation has gone viral globally, with comments that marvel at the optimal & beneficial use of urban space.
It is indeed a wonderful addition to Kolkata & will add to the already transforming image of the city.
Happily, this isn't the first example of such urban ingenuity in India.
Indore pioneered the concept in 2021 by transforming the space beneath the Pipliyahana flyover into an exclusive sports complex. Since then, cities like Surat, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, and Vadodara have followed suit.
In 2023, I had posted about a similar transformation in Navi Mumbai, hoping it would spark a nationwide trend.
While many states, Odisha being a prime example, are building world-class centralized hubs, the real shift happens in the neighborhood.
By dispersing sports access into everyday urban spaces, we do more than build courts; we nurture a sporting mindset and culture from the ground up.
Hon'ble President Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji (@rashtrapatibhvn) writes about the immense sporting potential of our tribal youth and how the Khelo India Tribal Games will provide them with essential facilities.
She emphasises that sustained encouragement to tribal sportspersons can create a pool of players who will establish India as a global sports superpower.
