In October 1996, during the unipolar moment, under the leadership of Russian Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin, all former Soviet republics convened an emergency summit in Almaty, in Kazakhstan to discuss the Taliban take-over of Kabul in September of that year.

30 years later, the world is no longer unipolar. Russia is gaining ground against United States and Europe as a major power on the global stage.

Now, Russia has invited Taliban-led Afghanistan to another major security summit. This time, they have signed major defence agreements with Afghanistan.

So much has changed in global politics in 30 years. Yet, Western analysts and commentators are still stuck in old paradigms. Western countries still think that hosting conferences for a bunch of Afghan pederasts and heroin smugglers and berating Taliban about human rights is a winning strategy.
