John Henry Holliday

A dentist from Georgia moved to the western US in the 1870's. seeking a drier climate to ease his medical symptoms.

Practicing dentistry from town to town, and known colloquially as simply "Doc", he eventually settled in Las Vegas, New Mexico, where he opened a saloon with a partner.

On this date in 1879, Holliday was forced to defend his saloon and customers against a drunken cowboy, and dropped the cowboy with one shot.

It would be the first notch in his gun belt, and the birth of a legend that attributes as many as 35 slayings to his quick and accurate draw.

The following year, Holliday would move to Tombstone, Arizona, meeting up with his old friend Wyatt Earp, and participating in the Gunfight at the O.K Corral.

Despite Holliday's penchant for risk-taking and dangerous living, he died peacefully in bed from tuberculosis at the age of 36.
