Crandall continued serving in the Vietnam conflict with distinction until he suffered a broken back in a helicopter crash. He went on to finish a storied Army career, retiring in 1977 as a lieutenant colonel. In 2007, Crandall was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in the Ia Drang Valley. He was honorably promoted to colonel in 2010.

After 14 brutal hours in combat, Crandall had completed 22 flights and 14 landings. He and Freeman delivered the crucial ammo that saved the battalion and evacuated over 70 wounded comrades. As the Soldiers on the ground took on the onslaught, the commander ordered incoming helicopters to abort the mission. It was too dangerous to land. As Crandall flew back to base, he decided he needed to help his Soldiers under fire and rerouted to a closer artillery base to help restock the unit. (3/7)
November 14, 1965. Ia Drang Valley, Vietnam. Then-Major Bruce "Old Snake" Crandall led a flight of 16 unarmed Hueys to transport Soldiers for search and destroy missions to Landing Zone X-Ray.
