Every drink with sweeteners - including Coke Zero, non-alcoholic beers, and oat milk will cost 26 cents more per liter.

Germany plans to raise 650 million euros a year from this tax.

If Germany hadn't sent so much money to Ukraine and given it to migrants, it wouldn't have to rob its own citizens.

Oh wow - Reuters found the GitHub record of the attempt by AI models being tested by the UK's AI Security Institute to deploy malware in an open-source project.

Pretty sure these actions are illegal under the Computer Misuse Act in the UK.

This was done by AI models that AISI intentionally deployed without guardrails. Should AISI be held responsible for the models' actions? If not, then who should be?

Swedish television has aired a report on the issue,only after the TCC forcibly detained one of its own employees.

What happened:

Swedish journalists were filming a report on Ukraine’s mobilization when their colleague, a Swedish citizen, was suddenly seized by TCC officers.
He was physically restrained, forced onto a bus, and taken away for a medical examination,apparently with the intention of sending him to the front.

The only reason he was eventually released was that he managed to produce his Swedish passport and press card.
Even then, getting him out was far from easy.

Sweden’s reaction:

The incident was serious enough for Sweden’s Foreign Ministry to summon the Ukrainian ambassador and demand an explanation.
Kyiv, however, offered little more than the usual diplomatic platitudes.
No meaningful guarantees were provided for the protection of foreign nationals.

The incident caused massive outrage in Sweden.
Yet in Brussels and Washington, the response was nothing but cold, calculated silence.

And now comes the obvious question:

Is this still going to be dismissed as "Russian propaganda"

When a Swedish journalist can be physically detained by Ukrainian mobilization authorities in the middle of a television shoot and nearly hauled away for military service, how much longer can Western governments and media pretend that nothing is happening?

So, is it still "Russian propaganda"?

Or is it simply an uncomfortable reality that can no longer be ignored?

HR asked me to install employee monitoring software across every company laptop last month.

They wanted screenshots every five minutes, browser history, application usage, idle time, and an automated “productivity score” for every employee.

I told them this seemed invasive.

They told me the executive team had already approved it.

So I installed exactly what they requested.

Three weeks later, the VP of HR asked me to prepare a report showing the 20 least productive employees in the company.

I exported the data.

Seven of the bottom ten worked in HR.

One HR business partner had spent 19 hours on Zillow during business hours.

Another averaged 46 minutes of keyboard activity per day.

Someone had watched four complete seasons of Love Is Blind.

The VP asked whether I could exclude HR because their work was “less quantifiable.”

I said the software didn't have a setting for that.

She asked if I could manually adjust the scores.

I reminded her that manipulating employee surveillance data might create a compliance issue.

She went very quiet.

At 3:17 PM, HR announced that after “careful consideration,” the monitoring software did not align with our culture of trust.

They asked me to uninstall it immediately.

I completed the removal ticket in 11 minutes.

My productivity score for the day was 14%.

Diesel hits €2.55 per liter, about $11 per gallon.

People do not understand that the German government welcomes these high gas prices.

1) This forces everyone to slowly switch to electric cars or bicycles in the city. That’s the green agenda they want.

2) The price includes roughly 58% taxes and levies. This means the state is earning more from the people and needs it now to finance the big military plans.

Roughly $6.40 per gallon goes to the state, so it has no incentive to lower the price.

They are not working for you.

Die EU verbot Einwegplastik-Strohhalme 2021, um Umwelt und Gesundheit zu schützen. Die Papierstrohhalme, die seitdem an praktisch jedem Kinder-Trinkpäckchen kleben, enthalten laut einer belgischen Studie in 90 Prozent der getesteten Marken PFAS-Ewigkeitschemikalien, darunter das seit 2020 EU-weit verbotene PFOA.

Die EU-Einwegkunststoffrichtlinie trat 2019 in Kraft, in Deutschland gilt das Verbot seit dem 3. Juli 2021. Die Industrie stellte daraufhin flächendeckend auf Papier- und Pflanzenfaser-Strohhalme um.

Forscherinnen und Forscher der Universität Antwerpen testeten 2023 insgesamt 39 Strohhalme aus Papier, Bambus, Glas, Edelstahl und Plastik auf PFAS, die Gruppe künstlich hergestellter Chemikalien, die sich in der Umwelt und im Körper kaum abbauen und deshalb Ewigkeitschemikalien genannt werden.

Ergebnis, PFAS in 90 Prozent der Papierhalme, 80 Prozent der Bambushalme, 75 Prozent der verbliebenen Plastikhalme und 40 Prozent der Glashalme, nur Edelstahl blieb vollständig frei davon.

Am häufigsten fanden sich Spuren von PFOA, einem Stoff, den die EU seit 2020 wegen seiner Gesundheitsgefahren EU-weit verboten hat.

Die Studie selbst hat nicht gemessen, ob die Chemikalien tatsächlich aus dem Halm in das Getränk übergehen. Eine US-Untersuchung an vergleichbaren Pflanzenfaser-Halmen aus dem Jahr 2021 wies einen solchen Übergang in Wasser aber bereits nach, eine spanische Untersuchung aus 2024 fand bei bedruckten Papierhalmen zusätzlich weitere in Kohlensäurewasser übergehende Zusatzstoffe.

Für PFAS in Papier-Lebensmittelkontaktmaterial existiert in der EU bis heute kein eigener Grenzwert, anders als für manche anderen Materialien.

Die PFAS-Behandlung von Papier zur Fett- und Wasserabweisung ist in der Verpackungsindustrie dabei keine neue Praxis, sie war bereits vor dem Plastikstrohhalm-Verbot jahrelang üblich, etwa bei Fast-Food-Verpackungen.

Wie stark diese Belastung ausgerechnet Kinder trifft, zeigen Zahlen des Bundesinstituts für Risikobewertung.

Die durchschnittliche wöchentliche PFAS-Aufnahme der Gesamtbevölkerung liegt bereits über der von der europäischen Lebensmittelbehörde EFSA als unbedenklich festgelegten Grenze, der sogenannten tolerierbaren wöchentlichen Aufnahmemenge.

Kinder und Jugendliche nehmen im Verhältnis zu ihrem Körpergewicht noch einmal deutlich mehr PFAS auf als Erwachsene. Genau diese Altersgruppe trinkt aus den Trinkpäckchen, an denen die PFAS-belasteten Papierhalme kleben.

Selbst der Hersteller des wohl bekanntesten Kinder-Trinkpäckchens wollte davon weg. Capri-Sonne startete 2024 eine Petition für eine Ausnahme vom EU-Plastikstrohhalm-Verbot, allerdings mit einer anderen Begründung, die Papierhalme weichten zu schnell auf und ließen sich schlecht durchstechen.

EU-Rechtsexpertinnen und -experten halten eine Ausnahme für unwahrscheinlich, die PFAS-Frage spielte in der Debatte um die Petition keine Rolle.

Ein Verbot, das eingeführt wurde, um Kinder vor Plastikmüll zu schützen, hat ihnen stattdessen einen Strohhalm in die Hand gegeben, der einen seit 2020 EU-weit verbotenen Stoff enthalten kann, ohne dass es dafür einen eigenen Grenzwert gibt.
