Ballon D'Or had 4 new changes announced after Messi won it in 2021, these were the following criteria:

1. It'll be voted based on Season (Aug-Jul), not on Calendar Year

2. More Specialists were added to the voting committee

3. Earlier 170 countries were allowed to vote, now it's only countries in Top 100 FIFA Rankings

4. Individual Performances will be given preference over Collective Achievements (Collective Achievements will also have bearings, but Individual Performance first)

Now out of these 4 changes, clearly 1st and 4th are most important. So let's analyse them:

• In terms of Season, the differences are simple:

- Haaland won the Treble, but didn't win UCL POTT (his teammate Rodri did), but he did win PL POTY

- Messi, on the other hand, won the World Cup, WC Golden Ball, and League but didn't win Ligue 1 POTY.
