With the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicking off today, it’s the perfect moment to recommend Asif Kapadia’s superb 2019 documentary ’Diego Maradona’, which traces Maradona’s life and career.

Built from more than 500 hours of never-before-seen archival footage, the film maintains the signature style of Kapadia’s other masterful documentaries, 'Senna' and 'Amy': it consists entirely of archive material, avoids talking heads, and tells the story in the moment from the perspective of its central character. Through its striking imagery and a brilliant score by Antonio Pinto, it captures the atmosphere of the 1980s and the rise and fall of a football genius revered by millions.

The clip here features Maradona’s famous goal against England at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico City, when he punched the ball into the net with his left hand during the quarterfinal at the Azteca Stadium. Maradona later described the goal as “a little with the head of Maradona and a little with the hand of God”.
