Meet the Grey Heron our #BirdOfTheMonth for May
One of our tallest birds, it stands up to 1 metre high with long legs, an S‑shaped neck and broad wings
Often seen silently stalking fish along rivers, lakes and wetlands
A true underrated bird!

Great teaming up with Helena & Eddie from @Birdwisenk + RSPB interns Wren & Reece to do 2026 Grey Heron census at Northward Hill. Further decline with just 47 nests (60/25, 78/24, 105/23). One dead on nest.
Much egret activity inc 8+ CE (2 AON) but LE in decline here too.

Colour-ringed Med Gull (3FR9) at Cliffe Marshes RSPB on 21/3/26 has come back as 22y, 9m, 20d old - originally ringed as a pullus (chick) in Belgium on 1/6/03. That makes it older than X/Twitter! Good to report CR birds. @Natures_Voice@_BTO@KentishPlover@Birdwisenk#birding
Our final guided walk of the week was at Seasalter and we were treated to 30 species including Raven and Red Kite 👏
Thanks to everyone who joined us today! More walks next week 🦆
The #easterholidays are in full swing and we're looking forward to our #birdwatching walks next week 🐰
Still a few spaces for Gravesend, Cliffe Pools & Oare Marshes but the others are full
If you've booked and can't come please let us know so we can release your space #birdwise
Hundreds, if not thousands, of Black-tailed Godwits, feeding at low tide from Motney Hill last night - gaining weight for their flight to Iceland. It may may not rival the Serengeti, for wildlife spectacles, but it was pretty impressive! @Birdwisenk@KentishPlover#birding
Gadwall migrate shorter distances than many waterfowl, preferring mild European winters, including right here along our coastline
🌍 A small number breed in the UK but most winter here before leaving in spring to breed in Iceland and Northern Europe

Yesterday at Queenborough we were thrilled to spot one of @ElmleyNNR head started Curlew N8 with its yellow leg flag feeding on the mud by the harbour along with lots of other Curlew!

Wonderful morning at Oare Marshes, with Steve & Nadia of @KentWildlife discussing management plans.
Drought, sluice, salt/fresh water, EA, NE licences etc. Not as simple as some might think!
Water back on East Flood & a Dartford Warbler along the road😊
Nice to meet @Birdwisenk
Today is definitely fine weather for ducks 🌧️🦆
If you're sat indoors keeping dry, why not check out this blog by Ranger Helena looking at some sayings inspired by ducks 🦆🔗
