Put your answer in the first third of the page. SparkToro found 44.2% of AI Overview citations come from that zone. Pair that with this: top-10 Google rankers now represent only 38% of AIO citations (down from 76%). Ranking β citation visibility. These are two different optimization problems.
@buildwithdk For the most part which I won't switch over, but data aggregation tasks like getting my morning news and hot topics, the spend there is too much to justify with Claude.
@buildwithdk Fair, I need to do a deeper dive. Claude is so ingrained so Codex will never be my main unless a significant difference is made. I still am switching over some recurring tasks to Codex for token saving.
New Profound data: across 15,155 brand configs, Gemini, AI Overviews, and AI Mode each mention ~4-5 brands per response -- but they don't mention the same brands. Median 8-point visibility gap between a brand's best and worst Google surface. One AI strategy does not cover all three.
Google AI Mode and AI Overviews give near-identical answers (86% semantic
overlap) but cite different pages 86% of the time. Only 13.7% URL overlap.
Ranking in one does not mean ranking in the other. You need to measure both
surfaces separately. #AEO
Everyone celebrated when GA4 added the "AI Assistant" channel.
Then it turned out Google's own AI traffic still counts as Organic Search. And Perplexity isn't in it at all.
The tool Google gave you to measure AI search... doesn't measure Google AI search.
This is why you can't outsource citation tracking to your analytics platform.
A year ago, ranking #1 in Google basically meant you'd get the AI Overview citation too.
That's over. Ahrefs just showed it's dropped from 76% to 38% in one year.
If you're not separately tracking where AI is citing you, you don't know your actual search visibility anymore.
ChatGPT sends 92.4% of all LLM referral traffic (6.77M sessions, 166 sites, Previsible 2026). Claude grew 64x YoY -- from near zero. Actionable: if you're only tracking one AI channel right now, make it ChatGPT. #AIvisibility
