I didn’t receive any teaching about mental health stigma in med school despite its devastating effects. So after I recovered & qualified as a doctor, I developed an anti-stigma programme. I received zero funding & support initially. So I paid out of pocket to deliver the Wounded Healer in medical schools & universities throughout the UK & globally. The hard work & sacrifices paid off: The Wounded Healer was integrated into the medical school curricula of 4 UK universities & delivered to over 100,000 people in person in 20 countries worldwide. More importantly, students with mental health issues informed me my talk inspired them to seek help & not suffer in silence. The first medical school I delivered The Wounded Healer talk was in Sheffield in 2014.

I was at work this morning and found myself in conversation with a woman in her late 70s or early 80s.

I’ll call her Jane (not her name).

I wasn’t sure where my talk with Jane was going for a bit, but then suddenly out of nowhere she started talking about Gough Whitlam.

Specifically, she wanted to tell me about the time she wrote to Gough to thank him for making university free for women in the 1970s.

She’d been meaning to write to him for decades because she was so grateful for the opportunities he’d given women by doing that, and finally got around to it about 10 years ago.

Well, she sent the letter off and thought not much more of it.

Until a couple of weeks later when her phone rang.

She picked it up and heard an eerily familiar deep baritone on the other end.

Yep.

It was Gough.

Thanking her for her letter, and keen for a bit of a chat.

She said they spoke for 10 minutes or so, during which time he told her he was still hurt and angry about what happened to him in 1975.

Apparently (according to Jane), Gough’s indomitable wife Margaret told him not to visit the GG to resign his Prime Ministership, but advised him instead to fight it out in court because the GG’s actions in sacking him were clearly both illegal and immoral.

However, Gough was a man of his time in being very loyal to Queen and Crown, so he acquiesced to his dismissal without a fuss.

And I thought: how many of us wish he fucking hadn’t!

Anyway, it’s incredible how a normal day at work can turn into learning fascinating things about Australia’s history.

And about a man so kind he’d take the time to call a woman just because she thanked him for improving her life.

And about what else Gough might have been able to do for others which would still reverberate down the decades, if he hadn’t been sacked by a corrupt Governor General and his equally-corrupt LNP sidekicks.

Anyways.
