Xabi Alonso has been under enormous pressure following a poor run of results, and Sunday’s trip to Deportivo Alaves was considered a must-win game for him by many inside Madrid.
Returning home with three points eased the pressure — temporarily at least. There is still a great deal of tension around Alonso’s position and there are still great doubts about his project at various levels, including at board level.
Alonso’s selection was revealing, too. For the first time, he decided to field the quartet known as Madrid’s ‘Fantastic Four’: Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jr, Jude Bellingham and Rodrygo. The last time they started together was the Champions League quarter-final second leg defeat by Arsenal on April 16.
But on Sunday, Madrid lacked balance and creativity.
Mbappe played the first half on the left wing, leaving the centre to Vinicius Jr. It was the latest example of Alonso’s efforts to be closer to Vinicius Jr, who went over to the manager to celebrate Rodrygo’s winner and hugged him when he was substituted in the 89th minute.
A setback in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday would be disastrous, and surely see a drastic decision taken, but the club’s idea has not changed from what The Athletic reported last week. Madrid would prefer to keep him as long as results allow, but the margin for error is almost non-existent.
