Motorists are almost twice as likely to die in a work zone crash as construction workers according to the results of a new highway work zone study conducted by the Associated General Contractors of America and Heavy Construction Systems Specialists (HCSS).

On May 29, 2025, an asphalt shoulder and median resurfacing project is scheduled to begin on S.D. Highway 79 near Hermosa. The project will begin just north of Hermosa and continue southward to approximately one-half mile south of the S.D. Highway 36 and Highway 79 junction.
On June 2, 2025, a closure is scheduled for Deadwood Avenue from Calamity Road to the Meade County line. The closure will allow construction crews to begin phase two of the reconstruction of Deadwood Avenue from one-half mile north of Interstate 90 to the Meade County line.
On Monday, May 12, 2025, multiple pavement repair projects are scheduled to begin on various highways in the southern Black Hills. Motorists should be aware of lane closures in place for the pavement repair work.

On Thursday, April 17, 2025, traffic on portions of S.D. Highway 87 and U.S. Highway 16A, in Custer State Park, from Center Lake to the French Creek Horse Camp will be impacted due to the relocation and transport of a South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks building.

The reconstruction project is underway on U.S. Highway 18 and S.D. Highway 407 in Pine Ridge. Project work will consist of urban grading, curb and gutter, storm sewer, roadway lighting, asphalt and concrete paving, ADA upgrades, and traffic signals.
