The Harpy is a creature from Greek mythology, traditionally depicted as a winged woman with the body of a bird and the face of a human. Harpies were known as spirits of storm, wind, and sudden violence, often acting as agents of punishment sent by the gods. Their name comes from the Greek word harpazein, meaning “to snatch,” which reflects their role in stealing food or people away.
In mythology, Harpies are most famously associated with King Phineus, whom they tormented by constantly stealing his food and leaving behind filth, ensuring he could never eat in peace. They were eventually driven away by the Boreads, winged heroes who accompanied Jason and the Argonauts. Although often portrayed as monstrous and cruel, Harpies were not purely evil, they served a divine purpose by enforcing justice and delivering consequences for wrongdoing.
