This is one of the fundamental issues with how localization works. They're changing writing based on the potential perception of the Western audience rather than faithfully translating the text to remain true to the characters as they were written.

The "cultural gap" they're trying to fill should be a feature of Japanese media, not a bug in need of fixing. The audience is engaging with Japanese media in part because of its unique nature, not in spite of it.

This approach is more about reaching as many people as possible through "adaptation" aiming at cultural acceptability instead of allowing the story to bridge any potential divide through its own creative quality.

It's very easy to understand that cultural differences exist & adapt one's mind to that reality rather than erasing it.
