And I challenge you to a dance off!!!๐บ๐ Name the time and place. @AlickMacheso please provide the music.๐ถ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ค๐ค๐๐
Happy birthday to one of Zimbabweโs leading opposition political figures, Tendai Biti.
I first spoke to him when I interviewed him on the BBC in 2000. He was at a police station in Harare detained for something to do with politics.
I turned to my then boss, Elizabeth Ohene, who was listening to the interview and said, โThe chap is very angry.โ
I didnโt know then that it was simply his combative leadership style; always telling the truth in a way that draws you in and makes you take interest in the issues he raises and upsets ZANUPF.
I remember in 2012 being invited to the World Bank office by the then country manager, Dr Mungai Lenneiye. Tendai was there at 11pm, shoes off, working with his ministry team trying to smooth things out with the Bank for the good of Zimbabwe.
Interestingly, we have often been accused of being too close because we are supposedly both Zezurus and from the same rural area. Yet I have never been to his village, and we are not even from the same tribe as some lie embarrassingly.
But Tendai just laughs it off and immediately focuses on national issues; although you can tell it hurts him to be falsely accused by his own colleagues of things he never did, like teaming up with Chiwenga or wanting to be the main character in the opposition. Sadly for him, when you are smart, people will always see it.
The last time I withdrew money from an ATM in Zimbabwe with my Bank of America debit card or any foreign bank card was when Biti was Finance Minister. Zimbabwe worked, the financial services sector was working and linked to the world.
The last time I was not constantly asked for financial help by relatives or friends was when Biti was Finance Minister.
The last time Zimbabweans with cancer slept peacefully at night was when Tendai Biti, as finance minister, secured the required radiotherapy machines.
I have won international awards for writing about corruption in Zimbabwe, but it was Bitiโs work in Parliament that made my job easier.
The last time ZANUPF was genuinely cornered in Parliament was when Biti was still there, and we all know why, he didnโt mince his words, folks like Tagwireyi were always sweating.
Unless someone is batting for ZANUPF, I do not see why they would hate someone like Biti. I call him Mr Dollar for Two because many things were so cheap when he was Finance Minister; items were sold for US$1 for two or more.
We need more leaders who are fearless, knowledgeable, tolerant, competent, and not intimidated by the competence of others. We saw how Robert Mugabe failed to cultivate that; he got rid of anyone who seemed to be ambitious or cleverer than him.
Happy birthday, mukoma Tendai. May you live long enough to see the freedom you have suffered for, finally achieved.
In a country where intellectual leadership is thin and not considered an issue, you have done well. Help more Tendai Bitis to emerge!
This is an Intensive Care Unit at Rusape General Hospital in Zimbabwe.
Imagine being in intensive care in such an environment!
This is what corrupt rule, incompetence, and repression have done to Zimbabwe.
One Land Cruiser bought by the government could fix this mess at this hospital. The Government has thousands of Landcruisers and similar cars.
But this is the best we have under Mnangagwaโs regime for healthcare, it is the best they can do, they just donโt care.๐๐๐
