South Africa’s international influence must not be under estimated. Its position that Israel is committing a genocide is now gaining hegemony within key state actors. Major world players are now repeating after South Africa in every input they made at the UN General Assembly. Very positive for us!
I hope this leads our international relations machinery to revive its global presence, especially in the African continent.
We have to restore the leadership role that once attained under Mandela, and especially under Mbeki. This is what allows us to act on the global platform in trade talks that can work in our interest. With a clearly defined interest, grounded on moral power and continental backing, we can shift domestic and continental fortunes in favor of economic growth, industrialisation, peace, stability and jobs.
It suffices to say the foreign policy posture of many liberals in the GNU does not appreciate that South Africa’s global standing depends, not on how much it imitates Europe. But on its ability to bring the African continent along. But also it’s command of a morally grounded global order!
Africa is not our weakness, or something we should be irritated with. It is the strength and power that makes us a global player.
We must not be an extension of the UK or the USA. We must also not be an extension of Russia or China. We must be an autonomous player that enjoys continental backing on major global platforms. Without the continent, which has a minerals and consumer base for world powers, we are doomed to insignificance!
Pan-AFRICANISM is the only choice! Or we are doomed!
